Powerball Reaches $1 Billion: When Will Mississippi Create First Winner?

As the Powerball jackpot prepares to pass $1 billion for the first time this year, there could be no better time for Mississippi to celebrate its first big winner! Read on to learn more about the latest gigantic prize on offer in the Magnolia State as we pose the question of whether a Mississippian will finally match all the numbers.

Tickets for Powerball and Mega Millions went on sale in January 2020. Both games have proved to be immensely popular and several MS players have landed wonderful payouts, including two separate prizes of $2 million on consecutive nights in September 2025.

Another Powerball ticket holder, from Petal, also succeeded in winning the Double Play jackpot in February 2025, setting a new record for the state’s biggest payout to date. The next big hurdle to overcome is for someone to pocket the main jackpot for Powerball, or indeed Mega Millions.

43 Draws To Reach $1 Billion

The current jackpot has remained out of reach for everyone, not just players from Mississippi, since May 2nd - a run of 43 drawings without a winner which is already one of the longest streaks in Powerball history.

It is the eighth-largest Powerball jackpot of all time and comfortably the biggest of the year, four times the size of the $250 million payout that went to an anonymous player from Arkansas in March.

The jackpot for Wednesday, August 12th had initially been advertised at $975 million, before being bumped up to $1 billion after a rush of ticket sales prompted lottery officials to re-estimate the final figure. The cash value of the $1 billion jackpot is $433.1 million.

In truth, there is no way of knowing when Mississippi will crown its first winner. Every ticket has the exact same odds of winning, regardless of where it was sold or how big the jackpot is. The state’s big moment could arrive in the very next draw, or the wait could still be going on in six years’ time.

However, as more tickets are sold when the jackpot is higher, more of the potential winning combinations are covered and there is a better chance that someone will match all the numbers. This applies to every participating location, but maybe it will be Mississippi’s turn in the spotlight when the next winner eventually emerges.

It has already been a great start to August for one Mississippi Match 5 player who won $550,000 in the drawing on Sunday, August 9th. The winning ticket was purchased at One Stop Food Mart in Pelahatchie. Keep an eye on the latest Powerball Numbers after every draw to find out if and when the jackpot gets won.
